A One-dimensional String in a Ten-Dimensional Universe

In the 1980s, a new mathematical model of theoretical physics called String Theory emerged. In physics, String Theory is a theoretical framework in which the point like particles are replaced by one dimensional objects called strings. The theory was a way to unite gravity and quantum mechanics, which Albert Einstein had struggled with.

String Theory describes how these strings propagate through space and interact with each other. It showed how all the different subatomic particles known to science could be constructed by hypothetical one dimensional strings, infinitesimal building blocks that have only the dimension of length, but not height or width. However, for string theory to be mathematically consistent, the strings must be in a universe of ten dimensions.

We observe four dimensions of space and time, but the remaining dimensions are proposed to exist at quantum levels too small for our observations. Over time, five different versions of string theory emerged, leading scientists to wonder if the theory was solid. This led to another evolving theory and will be discussed in my next blog.
